So you’ve hired your first marketing person ever. Congratulations! Now what?? What should you expect? How should you work together? Well there are a LOT of things to know there, but here are 3 simple things you can do right away to make sure you’re getting the most out of your new relationship:

  1. Know that they are your expert. Your marketing professional needs that leeway to be your expert in all things marketing (and branding) at your business. In other words, they need the ability to do the very thing you hired them for: their job. If they’re an experienced professional, they’re going to know what you need, they already know the moves needed to make it happen. Ask questions, let them educate you, but the most important thing you can do is let them do what they do best.
  2. Allow them at the table. This is where the big decisions are being made about your business. Your marketing expert needs insight into this – as well as the ability to properly advise you from a marketing (and branding) standpoint as you’re making decisions. That’s important so they can help connect your business goals, vision and direction to the marketing plan that they create and steer for you throughout the year.
  3. Be open to their ideas. Marketing professionals are going to come to you with a breadth of experience. They can come from innovative non-profits, much bigger Fortune 500 companies, they may have global experience, they may be interweaving ideas and best practices they’ve seen from other industries. Be open to what they have to share with you. It doesn’t mean you have to say yes to all of their ideas, but at least hear them out and don’t be so stuck on what you want to do that you can’t hear what they feel might be best for you to invest time, energy and talents in.
